LOWER STOKE CAR PARK & COUNCIL TAX INCREASE
Stoke Parish Council (Kent)
Following the release of the recent council tax bills from Medway Council, we would like to clarify the reasoning behind the increase in Council Tax.
After extensive discussions with Medway Council, Stoke Parish Council is pleased to confirm that we have secured an agreement to purchase the Lower Stoke Car Park over a four‑year period on an interest‑free basis.
In exploring all available borrowing options, members were surprised to learn of the significant interest rates attached to loans from the Public Works Loan Board, as well as the costs associated with extending the repayment term through Medway Council.
Regrettably, in order to proceed with the purchase and secure the long‑term future of the car park, the Parish Council has had no alternative but to request an increase of £15,000 in this year’s precept. Having carefully reviewed all figures, this increase — effective from April 2026 — equates to approximately £3 per calendar month per household, or around 75p per week.
As part of this arrangement, Medway Council will also enter into a tenancy agreement with Stoke Parish Council for the duration of the four‑year term. Once this period has concluded and all payments have been made, the Parish Council will take ownership of the freehold.
The Parish Council believes this approach represents the most financially responsible means of securing this important community asset for the long term, and we thank residents for their understanding and support.
